Tags, bookmarks, titles, and why Kinetic Notes deliberately has no folders. How to keep thousands of notes findable without maintaining a filing system.
There are no folders, and that is deliberate. Filing is work you do now for a benefit you might get later. Search is work the computer does when you actually need it.
Titles are your main tool
A note’s title is what auto-completion matches, so it is the fastest route back to anything. Rename a note with Command R⌘R, or double-click its title in the list.
Renaming is cheap and worth doing the moment a title stops describing what the note became.
Tags
Tag the selected note with Command Shift T⌘⇧T.
Tags are searchable in the same field as everything else, which makes them additive rather
than exclusive — a note can carry as many as it needs, and typing a tag name finds
everything wearing it. Use them for the cross-cutting things a title cannot express:
invoice, sermon, to-read, a project name, a client.
Bookmarks
Some notes get opened every day: the running log, the standing agenda, the list of things you keep forgetting. Bookmark the selected note with Command Shift D⌘⇧D and jump straight to it instead of searching for it every time.
Deleting
Command Delete⌘⌫ deletes the selected note or notes.
Working with other applications
Two features exist for the times when Kinetic Notes is not the right editor for the job:
- External editor support. Hand a note to your editor of choice, work on it there, and the changes come back.
- Export. Command E⌘E exports the selected notes to other formats, and Command P⌘P prints them.
If you would rather your notes simply be ordinary files that every other application can already read, that is a storage setting rather than an export step. See Sync and file access.
